Taking Advantage of the Hot Job Market

The job market is hot right now! There are plenty of openings, and companies are competing to hire you! So how can you make sure you weigh all your opportunities and make sure that you take advantage of this happening job market? The first thing to do is to prepare. Start with your resume, practicing for interviews, and use a recruiter to optimize your opportunity, and more.

Start your search now

Even if you’re just passively considering a new job, the time to start your job search is right now. Companies sometimes curb their plans to make more hire when there’s just the slightest fluctuation in the economy and unemployment numbers, So, as long as the numbers are good, now is the time to search and apply, before they change their minds.

Craft the perfect resume

Your resume is a great place to start. Update your listed experiences, making sure that you’re highlighting your list of accomplishments and achievements instead of simply regurgitating your responsibilities for your last few jobs. And throw in some numbers to show how effective your efforts were and what kind of contributions you make to your previous employers. You can probably drop any work experience that’s more than fifteen years old and anything irrelevant. For example, lifeguarding experience probably won’t help you get an accounting job.

Rehearse for interviews

Start practicing your interview skills! In front of the mirror or with a friend, practice your answers to common interview questions. You might even try recording your practice sessions so you can watch them and critique yourself. And generate a list of questions to ask your interviewer at the end of the interview. Your questions should reflect that you’ve done your research on each company and have carefully considered what this job would look like for you.

Establish your brand

If you want to attract recruiters, now is the time to start building your brand. What makes you unique? Create a personal brand statement for your LinkedIn profile that states what you do and what you’re looking for. Include any volunteer work, hobbies, and other passions that will make you stand out from the other candidates.

Work with a recruiter

The best way to make sure you’re maximizing your job potential as you embark on your job search is to partner with a recruiter. Professional recruiters have a better network than you do and have access to exclusive job openings before they’re even posted. They’re also experts in matching qualified candidates to open positions and have solid relationships with employers and hiring managers. When they vouch for you and support your application, you’re more likely to get hired. Plus, they’ll review your resume and cover letter and help you practice for your interviews.
