Fast Track Your Job Search with These 3 Tips

So you want a job and you want one fast. Which makes sense—it’s no fun to be without an income for too long and no one wants to have an employment gap on their resume. Or maybe you just can’t take your current job anymore. You need to leave and you need to leave as soon as possible, but you can’t afford to be without a job. So you need to speed up your job search. Here are three ways to fast track your job search.

Apply for targeted jobs

Applying for every job you find isn’t always a good idea. Instead, limit your search to jobs you’re qualified for and interested in, so you have a better chance of making it through to the next round. Your resume will automatically be a better fit for their requirements and you’ll naturally appear more passionate and engaged during the interview.

Just be sure to tailor your resume and cover letter to each job you apply to. If you send a generic resume and cover letter, your resume is likely to get passed over, especially if the companies are using software to scan resumes for keywords and optimal qualifications. And most hiring managers are completely turned off by formulaic cover letters—extremely boring and easy to pass over.

Let your network know

Unless you’re trying to keep your job search secret because you don’t want your current employer to know, start telling everyone about your job search and what kind of position you’re looking for. Even if they’re not active in your particular industry, they might know someone who is, and you never know who’ll be able to help. Try posting something about your job search on social media to alert even more people to be on the lookout for you.

Follow up with employers

Once you fill out an application, send in your resume, or have an interview, reach out to those people to check on their hiring process. They want to see that you’re genuinely interested in their company, so if you go dark, they’ll probably assume that either you’re not interested or that you’ve been hired elsewhere. If you’ve had an interview, make sure you send a thank you note within 24 hours. If you’ve simply sent a resume or applied, you should email or call to check in. Don’t be a pest about it, but they’ll probably give you a timeframe about when they plan on making a decision, so call after that timeframe.
