Is Glassdoor Closing a Door for You?

When you get on the Internet to buy something, what criteria do you use to make your choice? An educated guess would likely include price, availability, maybe color or size…and ratings by other users. On a site such as Amazon, products live and die by their ratings. Think of the last item you purchased online – which would you rather choose, the one with 32 ratings and an average of 3 stars or the one with 2,397 ratings and a 4.5 stars? The same system applies for companies — anyone who’s had dealings with you may have rated you. So, how do you measure up?

Sites such as Glassdoor, Indeed, LinkedIn, and Monster, to name a few, all have systems people can use to rate companies…and they do. Bear in mind as well that a majority of reviews veer toward one extreme or another, so you need to do what you can to earn those four- and five-star ratings. In fact, potential candidates will check these types of sites before applying to your company, and a good online reputation goes a long way toward bringing in the top talent.

You also don’t have a lot of control over what these sites post (unless something is blatantly incendiary or false); your control factor lies in how you communicate with employees, candidates, and clients who interact with you. Make sure your company conducts itself as well as possible, acting respectfully toward everyone (which is just good business in general). It takes a while to build up a good reputation, but a few negative interactions on a website can bring it crumbling down…and candidates do check out potential companies the same way you checked out your last Amazon purchase. In fact, a 2012 Glassdoor survey discovered that reviews influenced 83 percent of participants as to where they applied.

Make sure you check these social media sites to see how your company measures up and do what you can to maintain a good online reputation. Respond quickly to any negative comments and thank those who give you a good review.
